Jesse and the Intern -- Chris Gosselin

Chris Gosselin.
Son of Stephanie and Ken; guitar player, piano player, music minister, student, friend of Lauren and many others, dreamer, servant, and much more.
I met Chris via Jim Flanagan, friend and co-international man of danger. Chris had met Bryan Lorentz, and at some point in time, I received an email from him with a very strange question, "Jesse, I wonder if you would consider letting me intern for you." I remember thinking, "YIKES!" My first impressions of Chris Gosselin are still
crystal clear in my mind. Where the heck does this kid get his energy?! How come this guy is so pumped up about his faith? How come he hasn't blown up yet? This kid is pretty lit up about God.
It's all true. Just like Bryan, a thousand questions. Emails to Stephanie and Ken. Got a number of responses from Chris. Statement of intention. Statement of excitement as well a a sizeable portion of hope. Lots of prayer. Lots of discernment. More prayer and more discernment.
Chris discerns. I discern.
In time, Chris joins the band for work in the Diocese of Toledo, Ohio. We serve together in the Diocese of Providence, Rhode Island. We make it to Cologne, Germany, and serve over 15,000 young Catholics at the Sports Stadium in Leverkusen, one of the many catechetical sites during World Youth Day. Chris hangs out with young people. He lugs gear. Sells tee shirts. Finds me a music stand. Procures bottles of water. Lugs speakers, amplifiers, and tables. Plugs in mic cords, guitar cords, speaker cords and extension cords. Chris hangs out with more young people. He helps build a huge city of cardboard boxes and is in solidarity with the poor. He pilgrimages, prays, pays attention and eventually pays the price for eating at the truck stop diner.
We have conversations. Before, during, and after an event. It's all mutual learning and teaching. We encourage each other, challenge each other, support and believe in each other. We walk, work together. We teach and learn from each other.
I walk with Chris. That's all. I don't "need" Chris to improve my ministry or improve my life. I walk with him because I choose to walk with him. He chooses to call me, and then finds a way to get to where I'm going, and then walks in faith. God is forming Chris' life, mission, vocation in a whole uniquely wonderful way. I'm hoping that we're all just walking with God. And that along the way, God saves us from ourselves, saves us from our fear, our arrogance, our big ideas, big plans, and big strategies; save us from our violence, our prejudices, our need to control, our need to be holier than others, our need to be right, our need to be superior, our need for approval, our need to defend God, our need to defend the Church from a book or a movie, our need to defend Christmas, our need to defend prayer in school, our need to be more true, more right, more orthodox, more conservative, more progressive, our need to change others, rather than our need to let God change us!
I hope that God will save us from the need to blog in bloggacious verbosity.
