May 19th. The year 2006. Captain's Log. I've been asking Spock to ask the computer to compute to the last digit of pi, but alas, Spock hasn't been himself since his recent rescue from the Doomsday Machine.
Dude, that was random!
Hey, I'm home until June 3rd. I'm delirious with joy. Just some reflections of my past visit to OHIO! Arrived at noon, AKRON/CANTON airport. There was my friend, Cindee Case, "She Who Walks With and For Young People" in the church. I was in Ohio for a visit to St. Jude in Columbiana as well as St. Patrick in Youngstown. I
asked Cindee if there was a school, nursing home, or jail that we could visit, and she was able to call her friend, Vicky, and set up a concert for St. Matthias Catholic Elementary school. Alas, St. Matthias, is one of many schools closing in the area due to low enrollment and other factors. So a quick 27 minute concert for these cool kids! Then over to Columbiana for the Friday night concert.
It was cool to spend some quality time with Cindee. We have been bumping into each other all over the world since she "won me" in a few years ago at the amazing National Conference for Catholic Youth Ministers in Birmingham, Alabama! The NFCYM, or as others know it, the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry, Inc, sponsors this conference every two years! NCCYM is where you meet a bunch of the most devoted and dedicated folks who work as youth ministers, youth workers, and simply baptized folk who work for and walk with young people. Cindee and I have actually bumped into each other in Cologne, Germany last summer at World Youth Day! Pretty cool. This Irish Gal is the cooler than the other side of the pillow. As we're driving I notice she's got this very cool basket holding her stuff like pens, pencils, chopsticks, paper, and Star Trek Type II Hand Phaser. Okay, the chopsticks and the Hand Phaser are figments of my very special imagination. But still, it's a cool basket that's holding all of this. I ask Cindee about it and she mentions that it's a HANDWOVEN basket made by this US company that I'd never heard of called, Longaberger. Well, well, well, she had me at burger, so I asked more questions. Cindee's actually connected to this company as an associate where artisans actually make all of this by hand and you can support them AND buy gifts for friends and family. So here's the deal, check out my friend, Cindee's website where the Longaberger stuff is at www.longaberger.com/cindeecase
Cindee took me to St. Jude and I got to meet, reacquaint, and meet for the first time a bunch of folks. Janet, Janice, Joe, Cindy, Dr. Thom, Brenda, Barb, Fr. Tom, and other adults were there. There were tons of young leaders in the Church, Corey, Stacey, Angela, Daniel, Leighton, Dwayne, Jake, Sammie, Elena, Adam, Matt, Jason, Dallas, Abigail, Emily, and tons more. A child-hood friend of mine, Ken Quinata and his daughters, Isabel and Leah were even there! Pretty cool concert. The room was decorated to the 18's with smiley face balloons, posters, pictures, graffitti, and ribbons! You should have seen my hotel room. Some elves got into my room and decorated it the very same way. Yikes.!
Joe took me to Salem for about 17 minutes, to eat my first Amish dinner. Now my name is Jesse Amishbusan. Back over to St. Jude, hang out with the folks and then perform a concert. Fr. Tom was right up front particpating right next to Emily the beloved. The youngest and the eldest of the parish came out. Beautiful.
Next day, I'm hanging with about 15 teens and 5 adults from St. Jude. Couple of hours of song, story, prayer, interaction, breaking out of our comfort zones and really entering into the unrest of Jesus, rather than cruising in the usual un-gospel of comfort, safety and security. It's pretty amazing seeing how the Spirit transforms us into peacemakers, faith-walkers, and bold friends of Jesus. Near the end, Corey Rabquer, invites me to MacDonald's where he wants to treat me to a double cheese burger! BAM. We say our goodbyes to everyone, and Janet, Janice, and I head over to MacDonald's in the car, while Corey blazes on his BMX bike. We chat. Order chow. We chomp. High five and hug goodbye, and then I catch a ride back to the hotel to get some rest before my concert at St. Patrick's in Youngstown. St. Jude rocks. St. Jude rolls. Beautiful.
MAY 20, 2006, Evening
Carla Hlavac, DRE extraordinaire of St. Pat's, picks me up at the hotel, where I meet one of the Genese 5, Miss Elizabeth. Heading over to MVR's for some serious Italian food. Carla takes me by the billboard with my picture on it. YES. I AM ON A BILLBOARD IN YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO. Hello. That is so cooooooooool. I look...uh...er...pretty good. I'm...uh...very...very....big. Gotta love it. Over to MVR where I meet the rest of Genese 5, Stacie, Meagan, Elaine, and Catherine. These girls can sing. Hey - - I also meet Nicole, Amy, and Lisa, Ms. Ardez, Patty, Paige and Carmen. Dominic and Rene are in the parking lot posing for my new CD cover, called, "We Are Men and Muy Suave." Fr. Ed stops in for a second, with Johnny, our sound guy, but he's just checking in and then he's off finishing up the set up at the church. Folks roll me out of the restaurant on a dolly, because, frankly....Chow...wow.......ow!
It's a wonderful turnout. Every age group is there. My visit is part of the celebration of 95 years of service in the community of Youngstown and the surrounding areas. 95 YEARS! Lord have mercy. Fr. Ed has been there for 21 years....and I meet a number of folks who have served for well over 20, 30 and 40 years! Amazing.
During the concert I invite young people to lead the song and the gestures...as always I send them out to go get more people in the name of E-V-A-N-G-E-L-I-Z-A-T-I-O-N. One of the youth bring up an adult who is dressed to the nines in a suit, and I'm thinking, "Wow. Whose dad is that?" I see Fr. Ed just off to the right with mouthing the words "T h a t ' s t h e M a y o r !"
Yikes. So Mayor J. Williams, is standing in the front of the church, joining the youth in leading the church. I had no idea that the Mayor was going to be here! Apparently Fr. Ed did, and right after the song, I yell to everybody, "THAT'S THE MAYOR!" Of course everyone clapped, but everyone else already knew that was the mayor! I was just psyched that the Mayor was totally rocking the church with his hand gestures and singing. Awesome. Then the Mayor got on the microphone and made a very cool and unexpected proclamation of welcome and acknowledgement of me and 2 by 2 Ministries! How cool is that?! Way cool is how cool.
I attend two masses the following day, and give a retreat to about 40 teens of the parish. Hector gives a witness talk about his journey in faith. It is powerful and beautiful. I get to hang out and meet a number of teens. Geno and Vince, Josh, Mike, Katie, Yvette, William, Pat, Billy, Michael, Christian, Cornelius, Saul, and others. Adults are there too; Bob, Joe, Carmen, Ardez, Joan, John, Fr. Ed, and others.
It's a powerful three days in Ohio.
God is there.
God is here.
Let's keep rolling....
