West Catholic High School, Central Catholic High School, Blessed Sacrament Elementary School, Blessed Sacrament Parish...a one day revival in the community of Grand Rapids, MI. Laurie Miller instigated the visit with hopes, dreams, and support. Bob and Brenda Berding supported with transportation, housing and friendship. Spending the day with young people during the day; encouraging and affirming them, then sharing the challenge of the gospel to "be not afraid" in a culture, both church and secular that often perpetuates fear....that being a friend of Jesus is to not "defend" the faith, but simply "live" it. Too much defending and not enough living makes the world, and especially the church, without salt and light. Hello....

High fives to Laurie Miller, dreamer, and her family, Nicole, Danielle, Michael, Haley, and Michael, Sr. The same to Sue, Danny, Alison, Andrea, Kylie, Whitney, Blaine, the two Emily's, and I'm sure I've forgotten others....high fives to everyone!

Saw CHICKEN LITTLE with Brenda. We were the only ones in the theatre because of the snow. We laughed hard and ate way too much popcorn. Bob worked hard and then shared a CD with me that made my guitar jiggle when I laughed.

Love to St. Mary's in Lowell, MI, for the benefit concert. What a huge gift that will keep on giving! Good to see Dave Hawley and Kylie! Fr. George is a heroic disciple; in his seventies and right up front doing hand gestures and singing on the first song!

Emily and Amy, along with Kenny Lantier, from Louisiana, pick me up after the concert and we drive through a huge blizzard for two hours trying to get to Ludington. Emily and Amy reassure the "No Snow Boys," Kenny and I, that the snow thing is totally normal and "nothing to worry about." Folks, Kenny and I have natural padding, if you know what I mean. So what do we do when Amy stops to fill up the gas tank? We stand outside in awe of the large snowflakes while our DNA freezes! I'm sure we stood out like tourists. Dude, we're chubby guys and it was freezing! Which means, it was really, really, really, really cold.

The days in Ludington were full of activity. St. Simon Parish sponsored the event and churches from around the area, and even four and five hours away, attended! Friday began with my new friend, 11 year old, sixth grader, named Richie. We played two concerts for St. Simon School. We rock. We rolled. We sold platinum and gold! Richie's young. I'm old. (Okay I'm done.)

Later that night, we went to the Wilson's house. Anita boiled up some serious Fish Boil. Dude. No words. Alex, short for "Alexandra" introduced me to their black lab mix, "Nick." The first thing he did was growl at me. I was like, "Dog. I'm your home skillet. Show some love. I sat down on the floor next to him without looking him in the eye. Kept talking quietly. Let Nick scope me out, check my resume, call references, eventually he gave me the dog-nod-of-approval. I was allowed to pet him and rub his belly. Yep. I let him know who the boss was! BAM. Nick was.

Off to St. Simon for the concert. NIGHTLIGHT opened up the show with Jared, Josh, Kenny, Nate, and Bob. Great young group of musicians. Richie and I played a couple of tunes together. Then I blasted off with my usual pyrotechnic show with full blown ferris wheel of fire and Puffin Extravaganza. Dude. Everybody was there...folks of every age. It was a seriously sacred squirm if you know what I mean. The gospel shouldn't make you comfortable, it actually does the opposite; compels one to be radically "Christ." Which of course isn't what many don't teach. Most are "tamed" by the gospel, rather than maimed by the scandalous love of Christ, which in Mike Yaconelli's often profound and disturbing words, "ruins us!" I'd rather be tamed, safe, secure, in control, hold the approval and acceptance of others, but that's not purpose of the gospel....why do you think the words, "Be not afraid" always precede a visit from the heavenly and almighty One? Because, what God is about to ask us is to do something like... be like his son (who was ridiculed), walk with Jesus (who was plotted against), imitate Jesus, (who was gossiped about, trash talked, and slammed), follow Jesus, (who ended up dead on a cross at 33), love Jesus (who was rejected, neglected and altogther disrespected). Yikes.

After the concert....another two hour ride through another scary and stormy snow blizzard. Emily drove instead of Amy, this time. I still went to sleep to avoid any real or imagined danger. I'm so brave.

Love to Michigan...Bob and Brenda, Joe, Michele, and Evan Gregory Berding....pray for these folks!
