Where do I begin? Talk about a blur. Guam. Where my ancestors are from; my elders; my spiritual and physical chromosomes are from; welcome home Jesse. Frank and Lolla Manibusan, aka dad and mom, welcomed me at the gate with Archdiocesan folks, Ann Gogue, my look-alike Joe Meno, and Fred Rodrigues. My primo (cousin) Bill Chargulaf was also there. A quick trip to Shirley's coffee shop, where "SPAM and eggs" is a delicacy, and then over to Hotel Nikko where every room has the perfect ocean view. My body in shock from the travel and the dateline/time zone change, I find a way to get a few hours of sleep. I left Texas on......

Wednesday morning, and here I am in Guam laying my head on the pillow around 1AM, Friday morning. At 5AM, I'm awake. No time to waste. Fred and Joe pick me up at 6:30AM and we make our way over to KUAM radio station for the first interview. Tony Blaz, who I met during my last trip to Guam, welcomed all of us and we settled in for a great hour of conversation and music. This was secular radio format, but we spoke freely about our faith, our God, and the great responsibility that the faithful have in living out our faith. Former congressman Robert Underwood, stopped by and we got to share a moment. After KUAM, Fred, Joe, and I took off for Chodes, THE famous mom & pop's store with home cooking. I've got to write a song for Chodes. Chomping on homecooking, we head over to Hagatna to Newstalk Radio K57 with Ray Gibson and Patty Arroyo. Ray and Patty are some crazy folk. They are so sync'd in to each other it's uncanny. It's another secular radio format and lo and behold, here we are speaking of faith and plugging a concert and a youth convocation! More conversation with Ray and Patty; I sing a medly of tunes, live on the radio. Pretty cool. Tony Diaz, the Director of Communications for the Archdiocese is also in the room with us now. Ray checks out the phone bank in front of him and there are lots of people who want to go on-air and speak to me. Yikes. One is my cousin, Alicia, who lovingly scolds me for having to find out I was on-island via the radio. We're cool. Others call in who attended last year's events, and wanted to encourage others to attend. Lastly, the director of the Department of Youth Affairs (DYA), Chris Duenas, calls up and asks, "Jesse, I know your schedule is full, but it would really mean a lot to our kids if you could pay a visit to us." Immediately after the show, we walk to the car to go to DYA. I'm walking with Tony Diaz, and mention, I hope we don't mess with our other radio interview. Tony smiles. He's the next interview. Among Tony's many hats, he is the host of the shows, GOOD NEWS GUAM as well as FRIENDS AND FAMILY. It's funny how things work out. It's a miracle that Chris has the faith to call and ask. We arrive at DYA and enter a room full of young people dressed in uniforms that denote their incarcerated state. A few young men and young women are shackled by the ankles. The room is filled with a heavy energy. I've only got about 20 minutes or so. I don't sing in the beginning, but simply try to break the ice. In mere moments, the Spirit is melting everything around us, and the room has a whole different energy. I don't know, I think of Transfiguration. Something happened in that room. Folks sat up. Laughed. Listened. Participated. Applauded. Smiled. Listened. It was surreal what happened in there. Crazy man. Spirit has mojo.

Then off to the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral, where the home of KOLG, Catholic Educational Radio is situated. Tony sets up the interview, Sr. Marian Arroyo is present, Fred, and Joe. This is the voice of the Catholic Church in Guam, so listeners have a direct connect to the context of our conversations and music. Time flies and we're off to the Governor's House where I'm going to presented with something. We arrive a little late, and as we're being welcomed by the Governor's staff, Sean Gumataotao, my impeccable timing kicks in, "Excuse me, I really have to go the bathroom." Sean points me in right direction and the rest is history. Back to the Governor's office, Governor Felix Camacho, welcomes me and my friends from the archdiocese. The first thing Governor Camacho does is show me his beautiful classical guitar made of this extraordinary Chilean wood. He asks if I would play a song, and I do. "Revive us, O God. Breathe into us the way of your wisdom; the depth of your trust. You are our hope. You are our light O God." I figure, might as well go for what we need. It's a brief but beautiful conversation, guy to guy, as it were. I was struck by Governor Camacho's "regular guy" aura. He seemed genuinely humbled about the great responsibility that his place of power had placed him. The next thing he did was present me with an appointment, YIKES! This particular appointment is a rare thing. I am an Honorary Ambassador-At-Large for the island of Guam. Pretty cool and a pretty deep honor. I told Governor Camacho that I would do my best to represent. He then gave me a necklace, made of a type of Betel Nut, a native nut of Guam. Those who know what Betel Nut is...yikes. A great visit. Of course, the next visit was via an invitation of Sr. Marian to join her sisters for a celebration of one of their sister's feast days. Here's where the food flows freely and furiously. Some first graders, come in to entertain us with music and dance and Lord have mercy...they are spectacular. Joe and I are in stitches because there's this one little boy who is doing his own thing. Remarkable. I sing a few songs for them. Eat more food, then head back for the hotel for a two hour coma. Before I know it, 5AM turned to 3PM in the blink of an eye.

To be continued...
