February 2-4, 2007

Dave and Dawn Kordell have been trying to get me up to the Dells for their Resurrection Rally for years. Bryan Thompson, IT guru and woodworker master, picked me up at the airport, and although American Eagle lost my bag for almost two days, we managed to make it up to the Dells, where the site of the conference is the Chula Vista Resort. Hello Waterslides galore! It also happens to be 6 degrees below Zero. MOMMA!!! This kind of cold hurts. And Dude, it's not like

I don't have plenty of natural padding. The theme of the event is EXTREME CATHOLIC WITNESS. I love themes. They compel you to think and then act. Felt good breaking apart the definitions of "extreme," "Catholic" and "witness." Contrary to popular definition, an extreme Catholic witness is the profoundly simple yet power of presence, intention and mindfulness. The mind, heart, and compassion of Christ. ALERT! ALERT! TALKING ALERT! Me talking or blogging about the presence and power of Christ is not the same thing as living it from within and without. Talk is cheap. Just wanted to remind you, and especially me, that I'm full of talk. Okay, I'm done for now on that.

God was really present. I tried to be present too. I met Andy. He's a Ramrod for life. I met a bunch of guys who were the "Wolfpack!" Then there were "Rebels." Funny, but when I mentioned "Rebels," there was no response. They were really excited that I mention them. Oh well. My friends Jim and Neva, and guide dog, Elmo, were also present during the weekend. Got to meet Jim's mom, Lil. She's a hoot. Callie, Ben and Matt were the emcees for the weekend. Brad ran the sound board magnificently. Met the members of the band "Leap of Faith" from Iowa. Charles, Alicia, Stevie and Karl were awesome. I can see Leap of Faith being a traveling house band ministry. Amazing talent. They gave a workshop with Sarah on "Praise and Worship." Check them out at www.leapoffaithonline.com. They'd love to hear from you. Skye and Lily help lead morning prayer! Last minute plan too! Dennis, Lois, Sarah, John, DA MASS BAND, Fr. Bakke, and all of the other adults present at the conference were a tremendous gift. After the conference was over, folks dashed out to watch the superbowl. Becky, Bryan and I went to Smokey Bones for some barbeque, then I was dropped off at the airport. My original flight was scheduled for five, but because of mechanical problems, the plane that was supposed to get me to St. Louis, then to Dallas, was not going to make it in time. The agent told me that I could either sleep over in Madison, WI, or try to fly into Chicago, sleep overnight there, and catch a morning flight to Dallas. What could go wrong, did go wrong. I was put on a new flight to Chicago that would leave at 6:30PM and connect in Chicago for an 8:50 flight. Alas, when I did finally board my new flight, we were stuck on the tarmack in Madison because the engines wouldn't turn over. YIKES. We finally took off around 7:30PM, and landed around 8PM. It was going to be a close connection, but it seemed that I could make it. Then the captain came over the loudspeaker and said, "Sorry folks. There is no gate available for us to park at, so we'll have to wait at least 20 more minutes. 35 minutes later, the Captain thanks us for our patience and says maybe another 20 more minutes. I call American Airlines and ask if there's any flight out of Chicago later. The agent says my Chicago/DFW flight has been delayed until 9:30PM. Hallelujah! Our plane finally gets to the gate at about 9:15PM. I run, well, compared to you, I'm speed waddling, to the gate, and out of breath, barely make it to the gate before they shut the door. I've been upgraded to first class so when I take my seat, the flight attendant asks if I'd like anything. I ask, "Do you have any oxygen?" He doesn't get the joke and I don't care. I'm alive and there's a decent chance that I might get home tonight. I do. I arrive around 12AM. Thank you God. It's all good. Crazy. Late. Delayed. On time. Off time. Tired. Energized. Plumb tuckered out. No matter. God is here. My folks in the Dells have no idea and won't until they read this. I tell you friends, traveling is often like this. Lord have mercy.
